A chiropractor is usually a big part of your life if you are struggling with your back, neck and shoulders because of their expertise, but can chiropractors prescribe medication? On the surface this sounds like a fair question with a good amount of intrigue, but when you really think about it the idea of a chiropractor prescribing medication is obvious. The entire idea of chiropractic services is to repair your aches and pains without the aid of medicine. If they don’t rely on the help of medicine, do you think they could prescribe it?
Against the Code
The practice of chiropractic services is something that has undergone a time of intense criticism and hazing of sorts. People have questioned the practice for the same reason that they differentiate themselves, the lack of medicine. Many people don’t give a chiropractor the same respect as a doctor because they can’t prescribe medicine. The truth is that they could if the practice required it, but this is not the “code” of the chiropractor.
Why Not Use Medicine?
For many different reasons, from the success of the medications to the education required to be a doctor, people have long given doctors respect without question. While doctors do have to get a fair amount of education to practice, this same type of certification could be achieved by chiropractors. The difference is that the entire chiropractic field is based on treatment without the aid of medication. Instead, the chiropractic arts are done by highly trained individuals who do things the right way.
Empower the Public
Another thing that happens when you prescribe medicine to patients is that they get used to the help they receive from medicine and they want more. What you can do as a librarian, or as a champion of the weight room, is see how much you can teach your patient’s to do without your presence. Once your patients realize they don’t need money or prescriptions they can achieve so much more. Empowering your patients will only make your practice more powerful and successful.
So when you ask the question “Can chiropractors prescribe medicine?” the answer will be a resounding “No”. However, this fact should not cast doubt over their respectability or their claim to what should be a legitimate and necessary practice. One of the biggest reasons that chiropractors cannot prescribe medication is that it is not in line with the chiropractic mission. This mission is something that you should hold on to whether or not you agree with it on the surface.
Terrific work! This is the type of information that should be shared around the web. Shame on the search engines for not positioning this post higher!
Great information! I’ve been looking for something like this for a while now. Thanks!
My cousin recommended this blog and she was totally right keep up the fantastic work!
Thank you, I have recently been searching for information about this topic for ages and yours is the best I have discovered so far.
Chiropractors deserve prescription rights for pain meds, ant-inflammatories, and muscle relaxants, at least. One day.
“The truth is that they could if the practice required it, but this is not the “code” of the chiropractor.”
I have problems with this statement because in fact, chiropractors CANNOT prescribe medications. Their education, while lengthy, choosees to focus on other aspects of hollistic medicine does not encompass pharmacology. Therefore, Chiropractors are not equipped to dispense medications nor understand side effects or how to treat them.
What a crock.
